The "Long War" (as the GWOT: Global War on Terrorism is called by the troops) has been covered by many journalists. In my opinion, one of the best and most candid of these is the very talented photojournalist Michael Yon, who is himself a former U.S. Special Forces soldier. Very few "embedded" journalists have spent as much time with U.S. and Coalition troops "downrange" as he has, and it shows in his work.
You can check out much of Yon's work on his website, Michael Yon Online
One of his most iconic images and a great example of his work was taken in Mosul in 2005.
